BANANAS, THIT CHO AND WATER PUPPETS

This is a day trip off the beaten track too, but it goes one step further further. The day also starts with a walk along the Red River: a piece of countryside in the middle of a city of millions, followed by a 'food tour' that - we warn you - is not for everyone. A visit to the Water Puppet Theater concludes this excursion.

VIETNAM A LA CARTE - SONG HONG
At 8 am you depart from our family pension in the West Lake district to the Red River. After a short walk, you'll cross a bridge over a tributary of the river and reach what is commonly known as 'Banana Island.' It's not without reason, as the walk continues along narrow paths surrounded by banana plants. Besides that, depending on the season, you can also see corn, tomatoes, and morning glory. Once you've crossed the islet, you'll reach the 'real' river, which is over a kilometer wide. If desired, you can take a refreshing swim here.

SONG HONG - MIEU HAI CO
The walk continues to Miếu Hai Cô (the temple of two women), a simple building constructed a decade ago after two deceased women, whose identities were never determined, washed ashore.

MIEU HAI CO - LONG BIEN
Next, you'll reach the Long Bien Bridge: a staircase will take you from the ground level on the island to the bridge. This bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The heavy toll it endured during the war is evident as you can see significant parts missing from the original structure, which were later repaired in a makeshift manner. The bridge is now a rusty structure used for bicycle, motorbikes an train traffic.

LONG BIEN - HOAN KIEM
You walk over the Long Bien Bridge to the old center of Hanoi. The food tour that follows is not for everyone. No pho, banh mi or other 'standard' dishes are on the menu, but insects, baluts (half-hatched duck eggs) and dog meat. Most of you may think is's disgusting, but others are in for these - according to many Hanoians - culinary specialties. Afterwards you will attend a performance in the world-famous Water Puppet Theater.
