VIETNAM OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

This 24-day journey is not a typical highlights jorney. You will explore the seldom-visited northeastern mountainous region with visits to Ba Be Lake and Cao Bang by car, and discover Bai Tu Long Bay by local boat - an area much less known than Halong Bay but equally stunning. You will stay at a unique homestay connected to a project that supports underprivileged children. Instead of joining a group bus tour for the Mekong Delta, you will hop on a bicycle to explore this area of water, rice fields, and ferries in a completely different way.

DAY 1  HANOI
We will personally welcome you at Noi Bai Airport and take you to our family guesthouse, located outside the busy tourist center in a cozy neighborhood near West Lake.

DAY 2  HANOI
At 8 am you leave our family guesthouse in the West Lake district for the Red River. After a short walk you reach what is popularly called 'Banana Island'. That is not without reason because the walk continues along narrow paths surrounded by banana plants. But besides that, you will see - depending on the season - corn, tomatoes and morning glory, among other things. After you have crossed the island you reach the more than a kilometer wide river. If you wish, you can take a refreshing swim here. Then you'll reach the famous Long Bien Bridge. Famous because it was designed by Gustave Eiffel. Via this bridge you walk to the old center where you will be introduced to local culinary specialties during a food tour. Afterwards you will visit a performance in the famous Water Puppet Theatre. You can then choose to stay in the old center or walk back to our guesthouse via Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum.

DAY 3  HANOI - HA GIANG
The first, lengthy travel day will lead you on a well-maintained road to Ha Giang, the capital of the eponymous province. Due to Ha Giang's location in a politically sensitive area - it borders arch- China - your guide needs to arrange a permit for the upcoming days.

HOTEL: Truong Xuan Resort

DAY 4  HA GIANG - DONG VAN - MEO VAC
Via a winding road, you'll travel to Vietnam's Northernmost town: Dong Van. The farther North you go, the more the "typical" Vietnam seems to disappear, and you'll predominantly encounter people wearing their traditional and exceptionally colorful attire. And it's not just you who will be amazed; this applies to the residents of Ha Giang as well, as they rarely see foreigners. The journey from Dong Van to Meo Vac is one you'll remember forever: along a steep cliff several hundred meters deep, the road winds through a spectacular mountain landscape, offering an astonishing view of China on your left.

HOTEL: Hoa Cuong Hotel Meo Vac

DAY 5  MEO VAC - LUNG PHIN - MEO VAC
The main goal of this day is to visit the market in Lung Phin, a place where time seems to have stood still. Many kilometers before reaching Lung Phin, you'll see an endless procession of people walking on foot with their livestock - goats, cattle, and dogs intended for human consumption - headed to the market. Especially upon arrival at the market, you'll experience many curious stares as a "foreign guest." We expect our travelers to respect the local culture. This includes taking photos: do so only if people are willing. If you take your time to explore the town and the market, you'll find opportunities to capture pictures.

HOTEL: Hoa Cuong Hotel Meo Vac
