HUE: EMPERIAL CITY

Today you will be introduced to the history of Hué, which was once the imperial capital of Vietnam. There is still much to see, such as the Citadel and a large number of tombs built for deceased rulers along the Perfume River.

HUE - CITADEL
After breakfast you will leave with your guide and driver for the Citadel of Hué, where the emperors of Vietnam resided and which is somewhat comparable to the Forbidden City in Beijing, although this citadel is less grand. The beautiful buildings suffered greatly during the war, but extensive restorations have restored much of their glory.

CITADEL - THIEN MU PAGODA
Then you travel to Thien Mu Pagoda. This gained worldwide fame when a monk left this pagoda for Saigon where he himself. in protest against the war and burned down the American presence. The car with which he drove south can be viewed in the pagoda.

THIEN MU PAGODA - TU DUC TOMB
From the Thien Mu Pagoda you take a private dragon boat to the tomb of Tu Duc. He ruled from 1848 to 1883 and despite having more than a hundred wives and concubines, he produced no offspring. By the way, Tu Duc is not buried here, but in a secret, as yet undiscovered place. The two hundred or so workers who actually buried him were beheaded afterwards to keep the location secret. You will have lunch on boat.

TU DUC TOMB - MINH MANG TOMB
Minh Mang ruled Vietnam from 1820 to 1840 (his death). His tomb is the most opulent of the seven along the river. If time permits, there is the opportunity to visit one or more graves.
